John Porterfield, Principal
John got an early start with building science in 1976. He continues to be involved in high performance building design, testing, modeling, and verification for residential Energy Star certification in addition to energy training, commercial energy audits, home energy audits and energy assessments, mentoring, and home performance work. He is eZing’s in-house building science guru.
John has contributed to two energy-related technical books, and is author of How to House Doctor (1983, 321 pages illustrated), the first detailed treatment of energy waste detection in residences as a basis for selecting corrective work. He also participated in the Energy Code Working Group, and authored the group’s recommendation to adopt the 2003 Chicago Energy Code.
John was selected as a subject matter expert for the new BPI energy auditor standard to be launched in late 2012. In the last 2 years John has developed and delivered energy auditor training at North Branch Works (formerly LEED Council) funded by Illinois Dept of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and co-taught 20 week-long Illinois weatherization contractor certification classes at Wilbur Wright Community College, USDOE’s weatherization training center in Chicago.
John’s recent presentations include “DIY Energy Audit” at MREA’s Energy Fair in Custer, WI June 15,2012; “Steam Re-visited” at Wisconsin Energy Center’s Better Buildings: Better Business Conference, March 2012, and at ACI’s National Home Performance Conference, Austin, TX, April 2010.
John has degrees in Economics and Architecture with additional studies in architectural technology, project management, computer simulation, energy systems, and building science. His certifications include C.E.M., RESNET energy rater, BPI Building Analyst and Envelope Professional.
Cheryl Pomeroy, Principal
Cheryl has 22 years experience in the building trades and services. After working for 15 years as a union carpenter and general contractor, Cheryl opened a home inspection company in 2005. While inspecting homes from 2005 to 2008, Cheryl performed hundreds of home energy audits with John Porterfield at Informed Energy Decisions (eZing’s predecessor).
Once Cheryl and John formed eZing in January 2009, she has devoted herself to private home energy audit and owner’s representative work, weatherization program energy assessments and management, energy training, mentoring, and home performance work. Cheryl co-teaches the Residential Energy class each Spring semester with John and has co-taught the 20 week-long Illinois weatherization contractor certification classes at Wilbur Wright Community College, USDOE’s Weatherization Training Center in Chicago.
Cheryl’s one-of-a-kind presentation about measured savings from private home energy efficiency work has been given at Wisconsin Energy Center’s Better Buildings: Better Business (B4) Conference, March 2011, and at Chicago Center for Green Technology, 2010-2012 — “Energy Retrofit Results from Private Weatherization Work: Chicago-Area Case Studies.”
As the daughter of an environmental scientist, Cheryl has been concerned about human impact on the environment since the 1960s. Cheryl’s Ph.D. dissertation Environment, Economics, and Family Farm Systems (1986), written after anthropological fieldwork in the Andes, speaks to this continuing concern.
Her certifications include RESNET energy rater, BPI Building Analyst and Envelope Professional, and licensed home inspector.
